A pterygium is a fleshy growth found on the white of the eye (conjunctiva) which eventually may encroach on the cornea. This condition is very common in countries like India where there is greater exposure to sunlight. In Vignesh Meenu Eye Clinic, we perform pterygium surgeries by removing the fleshy growth and placing a conjunctival auto graft (conjunctiva harvested from a health site) to prevent recurrences. These grafts may be anchored by sutures but now – a – days, we prefer commonly use biological glue to hold the graft in place. Unlike sutures, biological glue reduces post – operative irritation, speeds up recovery and obviates the need for suture removal after surgery.

Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea is abnormally conical in shape and there is progressive weakening of the cornea which if left uncorrected can result in poor vision due to irregular astigmatism, corneal swelling, scarring. We perform Collagen Cross – Linking with Riboflavin (commonly called C3R) to treat keratoconus. In this procedure, custom – made Riboflavin eye drops are applied to the cornea, which is then activated with Ultraviolet A Light (370 nm). This procedure increases the amount of collagen cross – linking in the cornea thereby strengthening it.
